53. A Latvian peasant from Vīgante manor in Ērģeme parish. From his neat dress it may be seen that he is not a simple peasant but a headman. Over a fur waistcoat trimmed with strips of black leather he wears a linen overcoat; his trousers are wide, made of coarse felt or low quality vadmal [coarse fulled homespun woollen cloth]. Over his woollen stockings he has wrapped large bands of white linen up to mid-calf; behind the red-and-white belt which he has fastened round his waist, he has tucked a pair of gloves in front.
