A Nenets in his characteristic dress, who in the spring of 1786 arrived in Riga with reindeer. Like his fellow countrymen, he is of small stature, red-faced, beardless, with only sparse hair on his upper lip and under his chin. His outer garment is made of reindeer hides, sewn in the form of a sack. He pulls it over his head, leaving his face through an opening which can be drawn tight with a strap. Mittens are sewn to the sleeves, but only half, so that he can also put out his bare hand. His eyes are narrow and small. The slender stick he holds in his hand serves for driving the animals; when they are to stop, he calls out to them: “Horda!”
