82. In Riga the usual deep mourning dress of persons of higher rank, namely: a black coat made of felted woollen cloth with four buttons but no buttonholes. The waistcoat and trousers are of the same fabric. The sword is wrapped with a black crepe; the stockings are black, though not silk; and the buckles are bluish in colour. Mourning ribbons on the lapel were formerly worn only by the nobility or high officials; now the same are also worn by persons of the refined burgher class. Detail of a drawing by J. C.
