Photographic ethnographic documentation taken by A. F. Rittikh during fieldwork in Kazan Governorate, most likely in the summer of 1868. The image was reproduced in the 1869 publication using the phototype (collotype) process, an early photographic printing technique that transferred the original photograph directly onto paper in monochrome.
