A documentary about ethnic identity, assimilation, and ethnic politics in contemporary Russia, on the example of one Finno-Ugric people – Komi-Permyaks. The film by ERM researcher Indrek Jääts talks about ethnic identity, assimilation, and national politics in contemporary Russia using the example of a Finno-Ugric people. The film about the Perm Komi was shot in September 2008 in the Perm Krai, Perm district of Russia, mainly in its capital, Kudymkar, and nearby villages. Through interviews and scenes from everyday life, the film documents the current economic and cultural situation in the Perm Komi settlement, which is one of the poorest regions in the European part of Russia. It explores what it means to be a Perm Komi in contemporary Russia.
