Rittikh in Kazan Governorate, most likely in Kazan in the summer of 1868, when representatives of the governorate's ethnic groups were assembled for presentation to the heir to the throne. The image depicts a Hill Mari woman (Kurik-Mari subgroup) in traditional dress and was intended as a representative “type” within 19th-century ethnographic practice. The photograph was reproduced in the 1869 publication using the phototype (collotype) process by G. F. Lokke in Kazan, a monochrome photographic printing technique
